A minimum of 64 people lost their lives in a security raid cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's records.

Four security agents were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, state officials reported. Over 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Violent conflicts erupted when around 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Red Command responded with armed resistance, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities said.

The International human rights organization said it was "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

The area of favelas close to the city's international airport is considered to be the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful illegal networks.

State officials stated no less than 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
