Anthony Barry Reveals The Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

Ten years back, Barry competed in League Two. Currently, he is focused to assist the head coach win the World Cup in 2026. His path from player to coach began through volunteering with the youth team. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He realized his purpose.

Rapid Rise

The coach's journey has been remarkable. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a reputation through unique exercises and great man-management. His stints with teams included elite sides, while also serving in roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached legends including world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, it’s full-time, the “pinnacle” according to him.

“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that obsession can move mountains. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘What's the process, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a methodical process so we can for optimal success.”

Obsession with Details

Passion, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Working every hour all the time, the coaching duo push hard at comfort zones. The approach feature mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and creating a unified squad. Barry emphasizes the national team spirit and dislikes phrases like “international break”.

“It's not time off or a pause,” he explains. “We needed to create an environment where players are eager to join and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”

Greedy Coaches

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as extremely driven. “We want to dominate each element of play,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer the whole ground and that's our focus many of our days on. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead of changes but to surpass them and innovate. It’s a constant process to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.

“We get 50 days with the players ahead of the tournament. We must implement a complex game that offers a strategic upper hand and we have to make it so clear during that time. We need to progress from thought to data to knowledge to execution.

“To create a system for effective use in that window, we must utilize all the time available from when we started. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections among them. We have to spend time in calls with players, we need to watch them play, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, it's impossible.”

Upcoming Matches

The coach is focusing for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. They've already ensured a spot in the tournament by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; quite the opposite. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.

“We are both certain that our playing approach must reflect everything that is good from the top division,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the adaptability, the strength, the honesty. The national team shirt should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“For it to feel easy, we have to give them an approach that enables them to operate as they do in club games, that feels natural and encourages attacking play. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution.

“You can gain psychological edges for managers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, closing down early. But in the middle area on the field, that section, it seems football is static, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared these days. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are focusing to increase tempo through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

Barry’s hunger for development knows no bounds. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, especially as his class included stars including former players. To enhance his abilities, he went into tough situations he could find to practise giving them. Such as Walton jail locally, and he trained detainees during an exercise.

He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard included convinced and he recruited the coach to his team at Chelsea. When Lampard was sacked, it spoke volumes that the club got rid of most of his staff except Barry.

Lampard’s successor at Chelsea became Tuchel, and, four months later, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, the coach continued with Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged at Munich, he recruited Barry from Chelsea and back alongside him. The FA view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
