Three police officers lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate gas explosion at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to enforce an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

All three victims who died belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were arrested at the site and a third person who ran away following the blast was apprehended soon after. All three have been taken to medical facility.

The explosion could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the scene displayed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to remove the three family members in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the residence was facing an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the siblings.

Negotiators had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the siblings set off the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander told news outlets.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the blast immediately struck our members,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the interior minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of the state police and a firefighter.

According to the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor believed the blast had taken place on a floor above the doorway and told journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned members had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors told reporters, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in honoring the three officers who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
