Pat Bamford Joins Sheffield United Despite Leading Derogatory Chants About Coach Wilder

Patrick Bamford is now a member of the Championship side only half a year following leading derogatory chants aimed at their manager, Chris Wilder.

The 32-year-old striker, a free agent after departing from Leeds United, has agreed to a contract with the Championship strugglers through the winter. Bamford's lengthy spell with Leeds concluded by mutual consent this past summer.

Among the player's final notable acts as a Leeds player involved leading insulting chants regarding Chris Wilder amid Leeds' promotion party in April. Now, the one-cap England player will be playing under Wilder as Sheffield United's boss seeks to lift the team he loves out of the relegation zone.

Previous History Involving the Striker & Wilder

Both men had previous conflict before Leeds won promotion back to the top flight last season and United lost the promotion decider by Sunderland. The manager described Bamford as a "muppet" when the roles were reversed during the 2018-19 season and Sheffield United won direct promotion whereas Leeds fell short in the playoffs.

Making Amends & Moving Forward

Everything seems to have been put behind them with Sheffield United, the Championship’s lowest scorers, in desperate need of a boost up front while Bamford looking to resurrect his playing days.

The Wilder chant gained traction in April. An apologetic Bamford and the Leeds manager, Farke, called Wilder the following day.

Wilder commented at the time: “Spoke with Pat recently and I’ve no problem whatsoever with it. I’m not sure about the words used from a fellow pro! But I appreciated and admired him giving me a call.

“We spent a short while and similarly I talked with Daniel Farke as well and had a longer discussion together and he's a great person, a class act. When I was playing we would give it and take it and that’s an integral part of the game at every level, even on Sunday league. I have absolutely no issue. I am cool with the situation and I said that to Patrick.”

Recent Playing Struggles

The forward made 18 games for Leeds last season however the former Nottingham Forest, Chelsea and Boro striker has faced difficulties with fitness issues over the past few seasons.
