Senegal's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
When I enter the space, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his dad's approval to pursue his career in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning home,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Year and Continental Breakthrough
That decision put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to victory and earning best player.
Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to keep him focused.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are notable assets. Camara confesses a need to control his aggression, after being sent off early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.
Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions
With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. He is often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the main Africa Player of the Year in the future.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
