Slot Insists He Feels Secure and Retains Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Eindhoven Defeat
Arne Slot admitted that it was expected for concerns to be raised about his position after a further heavy defeat versus the Dutch champions.
Liverpool endured their 9th loss in twelve matches, representing the team's worst streak since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league title holders on a punishing night at Anfield.
“I am feeling safe, I am OK, I have got a lot of support from the top,” the coach stated.
“It's important to turn it around and earn three points of course but if you are in a managerial role and underperforming then it's typical that questions are asked.”
He continued, “I'm comfortable with my position. It is not the first time I’ve been in a tough spot but it is about time that we changed our fortunes.”
Discussions with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to elaborate on his discussions with the team officials, the head coach revealed:
“We communicate frequently. They are helpful to the team and to me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me every single minute each day to say they have faith in me.”
He added, “In the normal exchanges I perceive the belief. But I haven’t spoken to them since this defeat yet so it remains to be seen.”
Familiar Problems and Squad Reaction
The manager highlighted familiar failings from his team in their European defeat, specifically poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more forthright in his evaluation of the current crisis.
“I haven't got the answers. Honestly, I don’t. I’m saying that to all,” the midfielder remarked.
“It is unacceptable. I don't need to wait to think about it. I’m past feeling anger internally. I've reached the stage currently where I just don’t have the words.”
He went on, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the side I follow. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen Liverpool all my life.”
“For many years, I haven’t experienced a Reds side enduring a period of this nature with outcomes this poor.”
He stated, “However we still have the emblem on our chest. And until that badge is taken away, we will always fight.”
“We’re going to try to bring this squad back to its rightful place, show everyone once more the values of this club and why people call it the top club in the planet.”
“But right now, we're in trouble and we have to turn it around.”
