Taliban Employed Discarded British Technology to Locate Local Nationals Who Worked Alongside Western Forces, Investigation Hears

A whistleblower has told the Afghan leak inquiry that British authorities left behind classified technology enabling the Taliban to identify local individuals who worked with allied troops.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands in Danger

Person A, known as Person A, stated that people concerned by the data leak were instructed to move homes and change their phone numbers to ensure their safety from the ruling authorities.

Lawmakers are looking into the UK government's handling of a massive leak of confidential data affecting nearly 19,000 individuals who had asked to move to Britain to avoid militant rule.

Data Disclosure Was Discovered

An electronic document containing their personal data, comprising identities, contact details and sometimes relative details, was inadvertently disclosed by a staff member stationed at British military command in last year.

The incident was discovered only in August 2023, when the names of multiple applicants who had requested to relocate to Britain surfaced on online platforms.

Taliban Capabilities

It appears there is a misunderstanding that Afghan rulers are without comparable resources that allied forces use,” she told MPs.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. If they have a contact number, they can locate you down to within metres. That is what intelligence groups achieved.”

When questioned about regarding if authorities had access to advanced decryption, Person A declared: “They've got everything.”

Impact of the Data Breach

Initial findings presented to the committee indicated that approximately fifty family members and associates of Afghans affected by the incident had been executed.

A superinjunction concerning the incident was enacted in late 2023 and prevented all details regarding the matter from media reporting until recently.

Protective Actions

Given injunction limitations, the source and the volunteer organization associated with told affected households they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been compromised”.

“Our suggestion was that they moved where feasible and switched their mobile numbers. That constituted the crucial data that, if the Taliban acquired such data, would lead to their location being found,” Person A explained.

Disputed Conclusions

Person A disputed that internal investigation carried out by a retired civil servant had been incorrect to determine that the possession of the dataset by the regime was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.

“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are in hiding from the authorities; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves former occupations.”

The source explained terrible treatment experienced by at-risk Afghans, involving electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of toddlers who have had bones crushed to pressure households to disclose hiding places,” the whistleblower revealed.
