The Devastating Transformation Only 12 Months Has Caused in the United States

One year ago, the situation was completely separate. Before the American presidential vote, thoughtful residents could acknowledge the country's deep flaws – its unfairness and inequality – but they could still identify it as the US. A democratic nation. A country where legal governance held significance. A nation guided by a dignified and upright public servant, even with his older age and declining health.

Currently, in late October 2025, countless Americans hardly identify the country we live in. People suspected of being undocumented migrants are collected and pushed into transport, occasionally blocked from fair treatment. The eastern section of the White House – is undergoing demolition for a grotesque dance hall. The leader is targeting his adversaries or perceived antagonists and requesting the justice department transfer a huge total of taxpayer money. Uniformed troops are being sent to US urban areas with deceptive justifications. The Pentagon, rebranded the Department of War, has – in effect – liberated itself of routine media oversight as it spends what could amount to close to a trillion USD of taxpayer money. Institutions, law firms, media outlets are buckling under the president’s threats, and rich magnates are regarded as aristocracy.

“The US, only a few months ahead of its 250th birthday as the globe's top democratic nation, has crossed the brink into autocracy and totalitarianism,” Garrett Graff, stated this past summer. “Finally, swifter than I imagined possible, it occurred in America.”

One awakes amid recent atrocities. And it's difficult to grasp – and painful to realize – how severely declined we have become, and the rapid pace with which it unfolded.

Yet, we know that Trump was properly voted in. Despite his highly troubling previous administration and even after the cautions linked to the knowledge of the conservative plan – even after the leader directly stated openly he would rule as a tyrant only on the first day – enough Americans elected him rather than his Democratic opponent.

Frightening as the present situation may be, it’s even scarier to understand that we have only been three-quarters of a year into this presidential term. How will three more years of this deterioration find us? And if that period transforms into a more extended duration, because there is no one to restrain this president from deciding that additional tenure is essential, perhaps for national security reasons?

Granted, there is still hope. We will have legislative votes in 2026 which might create a new balance of power, if Democrats retake the Senate or House of the legislature. There exist government representatives who are striving to exert certain responsibility, for example lawmakers who are launching an investigation concerning the try to fund seizure by federal prosecutors.

And a presidential election in 2028 could initiate the path to healing precisely as the prior selection set us on this disappointing trajectory.

There are millions of Americans demonstrating in urban areas throughout communities, as they did recently in the No Kings rallies.

A former official, stated lately that “the slumbering force of America is rising”, just as it did following the Red Scare in the 1950s or throughout the sixties activism or during the seventies crisis.

During those times, the tilting vessel ultimately corrected itself.

He claims he understands the signals of that resurgence and sees it happening now. As support, he cites the large-scale demonstrations, the widespread, cross-party resistance against a broadcaster's firing and the near-unanimous refusal by journalists to accept government requirements they only publish authorized information.

“The dormant force always remains inactive till specific greed becomes so noxious, a particular deed so offensive toward public welfare, some brutality so loud, that it has no choice other than to stir.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I value his knowledgeable stance. Perhaps he will prove to be right.

In the meantime, the crucial issues endure: is the US able to regain its footing? Can it retrieve its status internationally and its devotion to legal principles?

Or should we recognize that the 250-year-old experiment worked for a while, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My cynical mind tells me that the second option is accurate; that everything could be lost. My positive feelings, nevertheless, convinces me that we have to attempt, in whatever ways we can.

In my case, working in journalism analysis, that involves encouraging reporters to commit, more thoroughly, to their purpose of scrutinizing authority. For different individuals, it might involve participating in political races, or organizing rallies, or finding ways to protect electoral access.

Less than a year ago, we existed in an alternate reality. A year from now? Or three years from now? The truth is, we don’t know. The only option is to strive to persevere.

What’s Giving Me Hope Now

The contact I encounter with students with aspiring reporters, that are simultaneously idealistic and grounded, {always
