Israelis have assembled throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident resulted in over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel answered by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities postponed state memorials until 16 October - after the completion of the festive season - but events still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the agreement.

A prominent representative familiar with the negotiations revealed that an evening round of indirect talks started at evening in Egypt.

The official stated the morning session concluded without significant progress, due to disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the deal.

He noted that the talks are "tough and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the differences between the two sides.

Key Matters in Talks

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The trade of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance distribution
  • Future management of the region

Public Reaction

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, young Hagar - whose family member endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and many more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until each abducted person come back no one will have peace of mind."

"When we see everyone home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people gathered to express their support for the relatives of the hostages. Israel states 48 remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be living.

Demonstrator a participant stated: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the captives to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now consistently show that about seventy percent of the population desire the conflict to end in exchange for the release of the captives.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the area of Nova festival, grieving people gathered to honor the dead.

From the site, the noise of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses said the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.

In the urban center, attacks were documented in the dawn of that day in the western district, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwest.

"As the evening falls, the anxiety comes with it," displaced urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.

"My family are terrified of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my smallest child who rests his face on me all night."

"Every second we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."

Medical Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had taken in the corpses of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the southern district.

Another medical facility in the southern city of the city said another two fatalities had been brought there. An individual was died by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the south region, medics reported.
